Neutral grassland is a widespread habitat in the UK, mainly found in lowland areas, including parks, meadows and pasture fields, anywhere where the soils are not acidic (heaths) or alkaline (calcareous grassland); the pH range is between 5 and 6.5. The plant diversity can be low for improved grassland, ie where subject to use of fertilisers and pesticides, but much higher for unimproved, natural grassand. Most neutral grassland plant species are common; there are only a small number of rare species, such as green-winged orchid and snakeshead fritillary.
