Fields, waste ground (ssp tricolor); dunes, dry grassland (ssp curtisii, the less common variety)
Flowers:
Up to 25 mm long; five pointed green sepals, two recurved dorsal petals, either purple (ssp tricolor) or white (ssp curtisii, though this can also be purple), two spreading side petals, respectively paler purple or yellow, and a broader lower petal, crossed by dark veins, more generally yellow in ssp curtisii. All petals are longer than the sepals
Leaves:
Ovate, shallowly toothed, with pinnately lobed stipules at the base. For ssp curtisii the terminal stipule lobe is much the largest, while for ssp tricolor the terminal lobe is similar to the others
