Waste ground includes a range of locations where the soils are disturbed, modified or otherwise unnatural, such as parks, gardens, verges, roadsides, railway cuttings and embankments, pathways, tracks, abandoned fields and vacant areas in towns. Many of the plants found in such areas are thought of as weeds, and the majority are common and widespread. Invasive or introduced species often first take hold on disturbed ground, along with garden escapes.
