The alismataceae, or water plantain family is a group of around 90 species in 11 genera, the majority found in still water habitats, with submerged roots. Flowers have three-fold symmetry; three persistant green sepals below three petals, usually coloured white or pale pink, and six stamens at the centre. Seven species are found in the British Isles.
