Thesium humifusum is the only UK species in the santalaceae, or sandlewood family, out of a worldwide total of around 1,000. All are semi-parasitic, and have a wide distribution. Plants generally have alternate leaves with entire margins and pinnate veins, axillary inflorescences, and flowers with three, four, five or six components.
