Around a dozen of the approximately 110 members of the potamogetonaceae (pondweed) family are found in the UK. All are aquatic species, submerged or floating, with hairless, untoothed leaves and small, greenish-brown flowers arranged in spikes, attached at the leaf nodes. Some species are very similar and difficult to distinguish.
