The inflorescence of plants in the gentianaceae (gentian) family is a forked cluster, branching in pairs, one or more times, from the upper leaf nodes. Flowers usually have four or five lobes and the same number of stamens, while leaves are opposite, unlobed and hairless. There are 16 UK species, and around 1,600 worldwide.
