Plants in the araceae (arum) family are widespread and numerous in tropical regions, with over 3,500 species worldwide, though only three grow in the British Isles. They have basal leaves and an unusual inflorescence composed of a large, leaf-like bract, the spadix, partially enclosing an elogated cluster of tiny flowers, the spathe.
