Buckinghamshire contains part of the Chilterns, a range of chalk hills extending west into Oxfordshire and east into Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, and here are found several nature reserves, protecting rare plant species. The northern half of the county is mostly rural, used for farming. There are no significant medieval ruins, Neolithic sites or Roman remains in the county.
