The small south Wales county of Blaenau Gwent is centred on the town and valley of Ebbw Vale, also including the upper reaches of two adjacent valleys, of the Sirhowy River to the west and Ebbw Fach to the east. The northernmost region, along the edge of the great plateau of Mynydd Llangatwg, is within Brecon Beacons National Park, while the other high elevation areas, between the valleys, are also public land, crossed by various trails and disused tramways. Other major towns are Tredegar, Brynmawr and Abertillery.
